In order to save money, people who want to use lip scrubs to keep their lips fresh and moist throughout the day have turned to making homemade lip scrubs.
These can be made fresh for each use, or enough made to store securely so they won’t dry out in order to have enough for a while. You might do this if you are giving homemade lip scrubs as gifts, too.
There are several recipes for lip scrubs. They all have similar ingredients, such as an abrasive for exfoliating properties. This includes any kind of sugar or salt. Also needed are emulsifiers such as oils or butters.

You can decide on any other flavors you might like. Liquid vitamins can also be added for extra protection to your lips. Here are some simple lip scrub recipes. You can add to them whatever else you care to for flavor or sweetness, or scent.
A bare bones basic lip scrub recipe can be simply made from sugar and a few drops of water. Mix together, then gently scrub lips with the mixture. Rinse with lukewarm water, than apply oil or petroleum jelly or a lip balm to moisturize.
This can easily be done each time you want to use a lip scrub. Another very basic recipe is to use salt, white sugar, and vaseline. Apply to lips, and massage in.
Rinse your lips with water, and your lips will be silky smooth and moist. This can be done a couple times a week if you have especially dry and chapped lips. A few drops of olive oil mixed with some brown sugar also works well. Apply as directed above and scrub, then rinse.
If you are looking for something with a little more than these very basic recipes for lip scrubs, here are a few other ideas. You can make a honey lip scrub with a teaspoon each of honey and baking soda. Add a few drops of olive oil and gently apply to lips, leaving on for a few minutes.
Then massage gently and rinse. You can rub a bit of olive oil in to your lips afterwards to seal in the moisture. Another sugar and honey mixture uses two tablespoons of sugar in a bowl, followed by honey – a teaspoon at a time – mixing together until it reaches a thick, sticky, consistency.
A few drops of olive oil added for moisturizing, then apply a bit of the mixture to plain lips. Gently scrub the lips and the corners, and then rinse. Again, a few drops of olive oil or some lip balm may be used afterwards to keep lips moist.
A slightly more challenging recipe uses 1/4 cup of white sugar, some oil, flavored or unflavored, a drop of almond or vanilla or any other extract, and a small bit of food coloring. While mixing up the ingredients, use just enough oil for a loose paste consistency. The amount of oil and sugar can be adjusted as needed.
Once you finished mixing, store in plastic or small glass containers. Be careful using the glass containers around the shower as they could break. A little bit of this scrubbed on and around your lips in a circular motion, then rinsed off, is all it takes. This same recipe in larger amounts makes a great body scrub, too.

One final recipe here for the more adventuresome uses 1 ounce of superfine sugar, 1/2 ounce either safflower oil, vitamin E oil, or vegetable glycerin, and two drops of flavored oil. The vitamin E oil can also be mixed with the safflower oil. Follow up with some sort of lip jelly.
